TEACHING WRITING INSTRUCTION

MY WORK SHOWCASE

Writing is such a crucial piece of literacy and a child's success in school and life. Throughout my time at Central Michigan University, I have had the opportunity to take an entire course that is dedicated to writing. This writing course helped me be better equipped to teach writing and helped me polish up my own writing skills. Over the course I worked on my own personal writings, studied genres of writing, developed knowledge of writing workshops, and facilitated kindergarteners writing with my host teacher for 20 hours.

Over 16 weeks, we covered many unit and genres. To start, we developed a knowledge of writers workshop and how to teach during this process. This was the basis of the course that we built upon as we continued through our genre studies. The genres we studied were: narrative, procedural, and opinion. Along with looking at genres, we studied Katie Wood Ray's The Writing Workshop, how to assess student's writing, and videos demonstrating quality writing workshops.

The purpose of this portfolio is to showcase some of the work I have completed throughout the course. This work shows my growth as a writer and a teacher of writing. I have created pages with some pieces of my work and reflections on my approach to writing. I hope to use this knowledge in my elementary classroom to teach writing instruction to my students. I plan to teach writing by facilitating writing workshops and conferencing with my students to learn more about them as an individual and as a writer.
