PROCEDURAL WRITING
This piece of writing is my procedural piece. I completed a genre study from the E-How website. During this study, I researched how these 'How Tos' were written and presented. By doing this, I selected a mentor text that demonstrated what a good how to should have in it, such as the headings, materials list, and numbered steps. In my own work, I created my own how to on making French toast. Along with the genre study text, I studied Duke's procedural characteristics to understand more about what needs to be included in composing a procedural text.
In my classroom, I would use the Duke's procedural genre list to help my students understand more about the content of a procedural text and what can be included, such as graphics to create a better piece. Anchor charts for the classroom will help my students with the grammar and word choice to use in their pieces. The piece I wrote would be my model for the students to show that these pieces can be simple and short. I would also want to include books as a mentor text for my students. Procedural texts can be beneficial and written in many different ways. I think it is a good idea to get students introduced to them as soon as possible. After writing this piece I reflected on my ideas as a writer and as a teacher of procedural writing, I would want my students to also reflect on their writing experience of this piece.
