This is a persuasive letter that was written for my apartment complex on recycling. I would use this to teach persuasive writing to my students by using it as a model and showing the different forms that persuasive writing can come in. I used tools to help develop my piece such as, Duke's Characteristics to Persuasive Writing. This was a resource that I would want to use in my classroom to help students understand the process of persuasive writing. I watched a video as my genre study that demonstrates one teacher's approach to teaching persuasive writing, that exemplifies the characteristics that I want to include in my classroom . Along with Duke's characteristics, I would introduce the persuasive topic with the 4 square argument chart.
I went back through my piece and dissected the letter with Duke's characteristics and looked at which areas I focused on. This reflection helped me create a better sense of what my strengths were in the piece and look at what areas I might want to focus more on to create a more persuasive piece. Along with reflecting as a writer, I reflected as a teacher of persuasive writing and thought about how to approach this genre in the classroom and what areas to focus on for my students.
